Valentine's Day 2011

Monday morning was a special time in the classroom as all the children skipped around the class delivering cards to all their friends. They had to be especially careful to put their cards into the right bags because many of their friends had names that began with the same letter. It was a great activity for one-to-one letter correspondence from the teacher's point of view...it was just pure fun from the kids point of view!!! Enjoy the show....

100th Day Celebration

Today was a very exciting day in our kindergarten class. It was the 100th day of school and the children couldn't wait to share their 100th day projects. Many kindergartners wore their 100th day hats proudly throughout the day while others wore them sparingly as the glitter fell from their hat. The kids got a kick out of my 100th day project which I wore in my hair...10 strands of 10 mini marshmallows. Throughout the day we had many opportunities to count to 100 by 1's, 5's and 10's. We had a small celebration with popcorn and jellybeans while each child had a chance to present their projects one at a time to the class. The slide show will allow you sneak a peek into the 100th day of kindergarten.

Four Winds: Teeth & Skulls

On Tuesday, the Four Winds helpers (Katrina Moreau, Amy Armstrong,Tammy Jadus and Wendy Ward) came into the classroom to talk about animal skulls and teeth. The kids discovered that the kind of teeth the animal has is a clue to the kind of diet they eat which then puts them into one of the four main groups: Carnivores, eating meat; herbivores, eating plants; insectivores, eating insects and omnivores, eating a variety of foods. We learned all about the three different kinds of teeth: incisors, canines and molars. After a wonderful puppet show about why animals have teeth we broke up into stations to create models of a skull and teeth, investigate some real animal skulls and eat a snack using the three different types of teeth. Enjoy the slideshow of the latest workshop.

New Year Classroom Activities

The beginning of the new year means new activities in the classroom. Perhaps the most exciting change has been the introduction to Guided Reading Groups. Every child has a brightly colored book bag with a guided reading book and other activities inside it. There is so much anticipation and excitement around learning how to read. The children want to spend every spare minute reading their books to anyone who is available. This is what learning is all about. They are invested, engaged and ready to GO!!!!! Some of the slides show the new snack table themes.

Decorating Gingerbread Houses

I have some pictures left over from before the winter break and would love to post them now for families to see. I have been working with Bonnie Birsdall ( our Technology guru) to see why my sidebar on my blog is non functional. I apologize for the breakdown and hope to get it up and running soon. In the meantime, here are some pictures of when Lauren, Kelly and Tyler came in to help decorate the gingerbread houses.

Day 1 : Constructing the Gingerbread Houses

On Monday, Lauren and Tyler were able to come into the classroom to help construct the houses to get them ready for decorating the next day. Lauren and Tyler really had a great time getting to know the kindergartners in my classroom and were amazed at how interesting 5 and 6 year old children really are. Day 2 pictures of the decorating will be posted on this blog tomorrow.

Creating Winter Sky Stained Glass Windows

We are busy creating some wonderful tissue paper winter sky scenes to put up on our windows. When the bright sun shines through it seems like we are looking at the Northern sky.
